A Historic Treasure in White Springs
A Rich Heritage — Living History in Every Aisle
Suwannee Hardware & Feed is located in the restored Adams Country Store, a landmark of White Springs history.
The store was founded around 1866–1867 by Confederate Captain Robert Watkins Adams after his return from the Civil War. Wounded and captured at Gettysburg, Adams was unable to return to farming and instead opened a general store that quickly became the heartbeat of the community.
By 1885, Captain Adams was running two locations—one on today’s site and another across Spring Branch near what is now the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center. After a fire in 1893, the current building was rebuilt.
Known as Adams Brothers & Company, the store served citizens “from cradle to grave,” carrying everything from christening gowns and caskets to groceries, farm implements, medicines, clothing, live birds, building supplies, and homewares. Its shaded porch was a favorite gathering place for farmers, planters, and townspeople.
In the 1960s, the Suwannee River Crafts Guild revived the site as Adams Country Store, showcasing regional crafts and goods. In 2010, Raymond Cheshire purchased and restored the building, carefully preserving its historic character. Today, Suwannee Hardware & Feed carries forward that legacy, where echoes of the past live on in every aisle.
