Florida Branch Railroad: A Historic Gem in Jasper, Hamilton County Fl.
Jasper, Florida, is home to a fascinating piece of history that shaped the region during the Civil War era: the Florida Branch Railroad. This historic rail line played a pivotal role in connecting Florida and Georgia, bypassing Union blockades and ensuring critical supply lines for the Confederacy.
The Story of the Florida Branch Railroad
In 1861, at the onset of the Civil War, the Confederate government recognized the need for a north-south railroad to connect Florida’s Pensacola & Georgia line with Georgia’s Atlantic & Gulf Railroad. The 49-mile route between Live Oak, Florida, and Lawton (now Dupont), Georgia, was planned to ensure smoother transportation of goods and troops, bypassing Union-controlled ports.
By 1862, the roadbed and bridges over the Suwannee and Alapaha Rivers were nearly complete, but the project stalled due to a lack of iron for rails. In a desperate measure, rails were salvaged from David Levy Yulee’s Florida Railroad, partially destroyed during the war, to complete the Florida Branch.
The line was finished in March 1865, just one month before the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. Though its significance in the war was short-lived, the Florida Branch Railroad helped establish the towns of Live Oak and Jasper, contributing to the growth of the region.
Legacy and Decline
After the war, the line became part of the Plant System and later the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, serving the area for decades. However, like many historic railroads, it eventually fell into disuse, with the tracks being removed by the late 1980s.
Today, a historical marker in downtown Jasper commemorates the Florida Branch Railroad and its role in shaping local history.
